Water Baptism

We are so excited that you are considering water baptism for your child! Every child can have a personal relationship with Jesus, and in Renew Life Kids, we encourage each child to make a decision to follow Him. Our children are encouraged not just to learn about Jesus, but to learn from Him by walking with Him every day.

Although the Bible doesn’t specify an age that a person must be before they can be baptized, we advise parents to wait until their child is at least 7 years old before being water baptized. There are several reasons for this! First off, while younger children absolutely can have a relationship with Jesus, they will not necessarily realize the significance of the event until they are a little older. Research shows that children begin to lose memories from their early years around age seven — and we want this important moment to be one they’ll always remember! Secondly, sometimes being submerged under water can be scary for small children, but when they’re older, it can be a truly exciting moment as they understand the reason for going under and coming up!

Water Baptism Guide:

As you discern if your child is ready to be water baptized (and is at minimum 7 years old), here are some questions to ask your child. The following answers show that your child understands water baptism

  • When did you decide to follow Jesus and become born again?

Your child should have a specific memory of when he or she understood what Jesus did, and that he or she needs Jesus in their life. It may have been at church, at home, or even when they were alone.

  • What does it mean to be water baptized?

I am following Jesus, and I want everyone to know! It is a picture of what Jesus has done on the inside of me.

  • Why do you want to be water baptized?

Because Jesus was baptized and he tells us to be baptized too. Because I want to follow Him. Because I am born again.

Your child IS ready

If you feel your child understands what it means to be water baptized, then we would love for you to read through the water baptism devotional with them.

Your child is NOT ready

If you feel your child does not understand what it means to be water baptized, it is entirely appropriate to wait. During this time, let your child observe water baptism and talk to them about what it means. We would love for you to read through the water baptism devotional with your child and encourage them in their personal friendship with Jesus.

FAQs

When can my child be baptized?

We provide the opportunity for your child to be water baptized several times throughout the year at Renew Life Church. Check out our events page to register for our next baptism!

Can our friends and family attend?

Absolutely! Your friends and family are welcome to celebrate with you.

What can I expect at the actual water baptism event?

Water baptisms at RLC are an event! We want to celebrate this step with you, and we invite you to bring your friends and family to join in, take photos, and enjoy the moment. The afternoon will begin with a preservice reception for you and your family, then we will settle in to the service. Once baptisms are complete, your child will be escorted off-stage where you can meet them so that they change clothes and head into their RLKids class.

What should my child wear?

Each person that is registered to be baptized will receive a t-shirt upon check-in. Your child will be baptized in this shirt and their own shorts. We will provide towels. After baptism, your child will be able to change clothes and attend their RLKids class.

When should I check my child in?

As soon as you arrive at church, check your child into the system and hold onto their name tag. Once baptisms are complete and they’ve changed clothes, simply give them their name tag and escort them to their class. Remember to keep your security tag as well, so that you will have no issues picking them up after the service.
